Education Minister Satisfied With Labour Day Projects

26/05/2018 – RJR News. / Education minister, Ruel Reid, says the government is satisfied with the specifications it outlined for ramps built in schools as part of  this week’s Labour Day activities.

President of  the Jamaican Institute of  Architects, Christopher Lue, has charged that several of  the ramps were not built to international standards and could be dangerous to wheelchair users.

Reid responded by saying that  the government will be looking into the claim.

“As far as I’m aware, our technical team, managed the ramps being built through the technical department of the National Education Trust.

So I can’t speak to other ramps being built by other entities but as far as we are concerned, we are satisfied with the specifications that we enunciated.

However, I will do further investigations,” the Education Minister said.

The ramps were built at schools, health centres and other public agencies to create access for members of  the disabled community.

A member of  the Combined Disabilities Associations, Therese Braham – also weighed in on the issue, saying she has also noticed issues with some of  the ramps.

“Depending on how you’re going up, you have to position the weight to carry you. So if it is not built to specifications, the person can fall out of the chair,”she said.

Meanwhile, President of  the Portmore Self-Help Disabilities Organisation, Bridgette Johnson, wants the authorities to erect proper signs indicating parking and other provisions for the disabled.
