W Connection beaten

W CONNECTION suffered their first defeat of the new Pro League season on Friday night, when they went under 0-1 a defensively tough Police outfit which in turn was winning for the first time this season. Despite the loss, W Connection remained top of the Pro League table but are now joined on nine point by North East Stars which won 1-0 over Morvant Caledonia United at Arima. Former Central FC star forward Rundell Winchester headed Stars’ winner home three minutes before the break, beating Morvant Caledonia goalkeeper Glenroy Samuel to a ball in the box.

The decisive moment in the opening game on Friday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, and W Connection’s first defeat, came from a second-half own-goal by their defensive midfielder Gerard Williams, following a goalless an equal first half.

It was Kenaz Williams’ wickedly swerving free-kick which caused all the trouble, the ball swinging between keeper Juliani Archibald and his defenders, before going in awkwardly off Williams’ body in the 57th minute.

W Connection responded with more attacks and might have drawn level soon after, had defender Triston Hodge and their Surinamese international striker Dimitrie Apai not gotten in each other’s way.

As right-side midfielder Neil Benjamin Jr. swung in one of several dangerous crosses on the night, his teammates collided and a good chance was wasted.

But none was more wasted than the chance which fell to newly-recruited striker Marcus Joseph in the dying stages.

Once ahead in the contest, Police had “parked the bus,” putting up a strong defensive wall, manned by most of the team.

Even so, Daniel Diaz’s cross had many of his teammates in its range after he got wide of the Police defender.

Joseph picked up the ball, but was neither clinical enough to score himself or selfless enough to give an assist to free teammates around him.

Thus, W Connection lost after three opening victories to the season. Later, defending champions Central FC dodged an early bullet when Army midfielder Hasim Arcia rifled a shot onto their crossbar in the opening seconds of a high-paced encounter, despite heavy condition.

Nevertheless, the first half ended 0-0, but not for lack of trying. Army had coach Marvin Gordon back on the bench, after he was hospitalised ahead of Tuesday’s 1-2 loss to San Juan Jabloteh.

Dodging the bullet, Central FC soon gathered composure, and action switched from side to side. Striker Johan Peltier struck well following a cut-back from midfielder Nathaniel “Spanish” Garcia, but Defence Force goalkeeper Andre Marchand made the save.

And Army midfielder Dillon King let Central goalkeeper Stephon Seepersad off the hook by losing control when trying to get the extra touch to a cross from his captain, Jerwyn “Bally” Balthazar.
